The Program

Athletics are an integral part of the education for all students at St. Paul Academy and Summit School. They enhance students' capacity for living and learning, as well as provide socializing experiences that complement and expand on those formed in the classroom.

SPA Football

Team sports are introduced as class activities in the physical education program starting in third grade and are the emphasis of the Middle School physical education program. Competition with teams outside of SPA begins in fifth grade. Participation on teams is not required, but is encouraged. The school fields an average of 90 teams each year in 15 sports with teams participating in over 1000 contests in 42 weeks.

Program Goals:

  • Instill appreciation of commitment to fitness
  • Develop a full range of physical abilities, muscular strength, endurance, coordination, flexibility, grace and agility
  • Teach rules, skills, self-discipline, cooperation, sportsmanship, respect and commitment to shared goals
  • Support positive self-image
  • Provide a range of opportunities for students to compete in sports of their choice

Program Focus:

  • Competition is an essential ingredient of the athletic program. It enhances participant concentration, interest, skill levels, enjoyment and self-confidence. Competition helps students to do their best and helps them learn how to deal with both winning and losing.
  • We strive to provide competition in which the student athletes are neither consistently over-matched nor consistently under-matched. Our student athletes are expected to play their best, play fairly and respect the efforts of their opponents.
  • Our program is led by caring professionals who promote high expectations while offering genuine opportunities for our student athletes to be successful.
